Boreholes are friendly and beneficial to the environment
The Environment Agency ensures that a strict set of rules are applied to borehole drilling before permission is given. Geologists estimate that there is two thirds more water underground than in potential surface sources.

Every customer who switches to their own source can potentially save compared to continuing with mains water supply, which may have been sourced from rivers.

This diagram is to help you understand how a borehole works.

| Borehole water is often totally independent of surface water and coming from underground rivers or aquifers in the bedrock. These sources may be over twenty miles from the boreholes location. Generally, we drill boreholes to a minimum depth of fifty metres where there is an adequate supply to meet the demands put on it. At this depth there is very little chance of contamination to the water. In addition to this we line the borehole with steel until we reach solid rock and we then pressure grout it into the rock so as to ensure a good seal for the borehole from outside sources and to eliminate any chance of any surface contamination. |
